Rodeo Fun!

We took the kids to the Rodeo Grounds yesterday.  Tatum loved seeing all the animals.  Druz is our little observer so he just chilled in the stroller and was perfectly happy people watching, definitely my kid.

We saw bunnies...

and pigs...

and the biggest cows I have EVER seen in my life!

 Stopped by the horse show
What a cute little Cowgirl!

She rode a dragon...

and drove a four-wheeler...

and even rode on a motorcycle.

She was one happy girl, until it was time to go, of course!

Quick Updates

I'm so far behind on the blog that I can't possibly go through each event so here are a few pics and updates from the end of January...

My Girl

Peace

Enjoying the BEAUTIFUL weather

She fell backwards right into her drum...she was asking me to help her out but I HAD to get a picture first!  Mom of the Year Award, I know.

Thank You Pinterest for the great tutorial on making fabric flowers.  I'm making hair bows for sweet little Baby Harper.

My perfect daughter, decided to dump her milk and yogurt on the table while I was getting Druz up and dressed in the morning.  She has NEVER done anything like this before.  She freaks out if her hands get dirty in any way, so this was quite a little surprise to walk into.  Someone is needing some serious attention lately.

Trip to the park...in gymnastics they climb up a rope so she thinks she can do it at the park now...she didn't get far but practice makes perfect.  ;o)

75 degrees in January???

Isn't this just the sweetest picture?

I had a birthday and we celebrated Dylan and My birthdays at Mom's...we got a scale.  Do you think she was trying to tell us something???

My little marching band

Yikes, looks like she wasn't happy with the other members.

You know they have had enough when they start EATING the camera.

Kairos Moments

This article was written up in the Huffington Post by Glennon Melton and has been all over the internet.  I LOVE staying home with the kids and would cry (literally) if one day I have to leave their sweet faces and go back to work.  I thank God EVERY SINGLE DAY for the life I have, even on the bad days.  BUT...there ARE bad days and bad moments so this article really spoke to me...Thanks for all my many facebook friends for sharing!

Every time I'm out with my kids -- this seems to happen:

An older woman stops us, puts her hand over her heart and says something like, "Oh, Enjoy every moment. This time goes by so fast."

Everywhere I go, someone is telling me to seize the moment, raise my awareness, be happy, enjoy every second, etc, etc, etc.

I know that this message is right and good. But, I have finally allowed myself to admit that it just doesn't work for me. It bugs me. This CARPE DIEM message makes me paranoid and panicky. Especially during this phase of my life - while I'm raising young kids. Being told, in a million different ways to CARPE DIEM makes me worry that if I'm not in a constant state of intense gratitude and ecstasy, I'm doing something wrong.

I think parenting young children (and old ones, I've heard) is a little like climbing Mount Everest. Brave, adventurous souls try it because they've heard there's magic in the climb. They try because they believe that finishing, or even attempting the climb are impressive accomplishments. They try because during the climb, if they allow themselves to pause and lift their eyes and minds from the pain and drudgery, the views are breathtaking. They try because even though it hurts and it's hard, there are moments that make it worth the hard. These moments are so intense and unique that many people who reach the top start planning, almost immediately, to climb again. Even though any climber will tell you that most of the climb is treacherous, exhausting, killer. That they literally cried most of the way up.

And so I think that if there were people stationed, say, every thirty feet along Mount Everest yelling to the climbers -- "ARE YOU ENJOYING YOURSELF!? IF NOT, YOU SHOULD BE! ONE DAY YOU'LL BE SORRY YOU DIDN'T!" TRUST US!! IT'LL BE OVER TOO SOON! CARPE DIEM!" -- those well-meaning, nostalgic cheerleaders might be physically thrown from the mountain.

Now. I'm not suggesting that the sweet old ladies who tell me to ENJOY MYSELF be thrown from a mountain. These are wonderful ladies. Monkees, probably. But last week, a woman approached me in the Target line and said the following: "Sugar, I hope you are enjoying this. I loved every single second of parenting my two girls. Every single moment. These days go by so fast."

At that particular moment, Amma had arranged one of the new bras I was buying on top of her sweater and was sucking a lollipop that she must have found on the ground. She also had three shop-lifted clip-on neon feathers stuck in her hair. She looked exactly like a contestant from Toddlers and Tiaras. I couldn't find Chase anywhere, and Tish was grabbing the pen on the credit card swiper thing WHILE the woman in front of me was trying to use it. And so I just looked at the woman, smiled and said, "Thank you. Yes. Me too. I am enjoying every single moment. Especially this one. Yes. Thank you."

That's not exactly what I wanted to say, though.

There was a famous writer who, when asked if he loved writing, replied, "No. but I love having written." What I wanted to say to this sweet woman was, "Are you sure? Are you sure you don't mean you love having parented?"

I love having written. And I love having parented. My favorite part of each day is when the kids are put to sleep (to bed) and Craig and I sink into the couch to watch some quality TV, like Celebrity Wife Swap, and congratulate each other on a job well done. Or a job done, at least.

Every time I write a post like this, I get emails suggesting that I'm being negative. I have received this particular message four or five times -- G, if you can't handle the three you have, why do you want a fourth?

That one always stings, and I don't think it's quite fair. Parenting is hard. Just like lots of important jobs are hard. Why is it that the second a mother admits that it's hard, people feel the need to suggest that maybe she's not doing it right? Or that she certainly shouldn't add more to her load. Maybe the fact that it's so hard means she IS doing it right...in her own way...and she happens to be honest.

Craig is a software salesman. It's a hard job in this economy. And he comes home each day and talks a little bit about how hard it is. And I don't ever feel the need to suggest that he's not doing it right, or that he's negative for noticing that it's hard, or that maybe he shouldn't even consider taking on more responsibility. And I doubt anybody comes by his office to make sure he's ENJOYING HIMSELF. I doubt his boss peeks in his office and says: "This career stuff...it goes by so fast...ARE YOU ENJOYING EVERY MOMENT IN THERE, CRAIG???? CARPE DIEM, CRAIG!"

My point is this. I used to worry that not only was I failing to do a good enough job at parenting, but that I wasn't enjoying it enough. Double failure. I felt guilty because I wasn't in parental ecstasy every hour of every day and I wasn't MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY MOMENT like the mamas in the parenting magazines seemed to be doing. I felt guilty because honestly, I was tired and cranky and ready for the day to be over quite often. And because I knew that one day, I'd wake up and the kids would be gone, and I'd be the old lady in the grocery store with my hand over my heart. Would I be able to say I enjoyed every moment? No.

But the fact remains that I will be that nostalgic lady. I just hope to be one with a clear memory. And here's what I hope to say to the younger mama gritting her teeth in line:

"It's helluva hard, isn't it? You're a good mom, I can tell. And I like your kids, especially that one peeing in the corner. She's my favorite. Carry on, warrior. Six hours till bedtime." And hopefully, every once in a while, I'll add -- "Let me pick up that grocery bill for ya, sister. Go put those kids in the van and pull on up -- I'll have them bring your groceries out."

Anyway. Clearly, Carpe Diem doesn't work for me. I can't even carpe fifteen minutes in a row, so a whole diem is out of the question.

Here's what does work for me:

There are two different types of time. Chronos time is what we live in. It's regular time, it's one minute at a time, it's staring down the clock till bedtime time, it's ten excruciating minutes in the Target line time, it's four screaming minutes in time out time, it's two hours till daddy gets home time. Chronos is the hard, slow passing time we parents often live in.

Then there's Kairos time. Kairos is God's time. It's time outside of time. It's metaphysical time. It's those magical moments in which time stands still. I have a few of those moments each day. And I cherish them.

Like when I actually stop what I'm doing and really look at Tish. I notice how perfectly smooth and brownish her skin is. I notice the perfect curves of her teeny elf mouth and her asianish brown eyes, and I breathe in her soft Tishy smell. In these moments, I see that her mouth is moving but I can't hear her because all I can think is -- This is the first time I've really seen Tish all day, and my God -- she is so beautiful. Kairos.

Like when I'm stuck in chronos time in the grocery line and I'm haggard and annoyed and angry at the slow check-out clerk. And then I look at my cart and I'm transported out of chronos. And suddenly I notice the piles and piles of healthy food I'll feed my children to grow their bodies and minds and I remember that most of the world's mamas would kill for this opportunity. This chance to stand in a grocery line with enough money to pay. And I just stare at my cart. At the abundance. The bounty. Thank you, God. Kairos.

Or when I curl up in my cozy bed with Theo asleep at my feet and Craig asleep by my side and I listen to them both breathing. And for a moment, I think- how did a girl like me get so lucky? To go to bed each night surrounded by this breath, this love, this peace, this warmth? Kairos.

These kairos moments leave as fast as they come- but I mark them. I say the word kairos in my head each time I leave chronos. And at the end of the day, I don't remember exactly what my kairos moments were, but I remember I had them. And that makes the pain of the daily parenting climb worth it.

If I had a couple Kairos moments during the day, I call it a success.

Carpe a couple of Kairoses a day.

Good enough for me.

The Game On Diet

As I mentioned in my last post, I started a diet.  It's not really a "diet".  I'm calling it a kick start to a healthier life.

Here are the basics...

It lasts four weeks.

Eat 5 meals a day, each meal must include a protein, carb or fruit, a fat, and 2 meals have to include 2 servings of veggies.

Drink 3 liters of water a day

Sleep at least 7 hours

Exercise a minimum of 20 minutes, 6 days a week

You have to think of one bad habit you want to stop doing and one good habit you want to start doing.

You get an extra 100 calories a day of anything you want.

No soda and no alcohol (couple exceptions here)

You get one meal off and one whole day off.

It works on a point system and its one team against another.

You have to communicate with one person from your team and one person from the opposing team at least once a day.

Yesterday was my first perfect day.  I'm having a slight problem with my bad habit...cussing, I know, I know.  I'm trying.

My good habit is reading my bible and I haven't missed that once yet so that is something to be proud of.

You also have a weight loss goal (usually 1% of your starting weight) or a fitness goal and you get points if you make your goal for the week.  I chose to do a fitness goal.  Since I'm training for a 15k, I decided my goal would be to run 1 mile longer every week.  I'm not all that concerned about dropping pounds.  I want to tone and that won't help as far as losing weight, I will probably gain so that's why I chose the running goal.

Tonight we had spinach/onion/garlic burgers and mashed cauliflower.  I have also had breakfast tacos, and my go-to has been a whole wheat tortilla with avocado, turkey breast, and a piece of turkey bacon...so good!!!

If your competitive and want to lose some weight or meet another fitness goal, you should grab some friends, buy the book, and go for it!

The winning team gets a gift certificate to lululemon...we better win!!!

Busy Day

Imagine the next few pictures as a flip book.

If you look closely you can see there is a bruise on little man's cheek and his eye is swollen...you would think his cheeks were swollen but those are normal.  Carmen decided to play London Bridges and Druz just doesn't have long enough arms for that yet.
Please ignore the pink bib...hazard of having an older sister.

After Druz got up from his nap we loaded up and headed out for a fun day.  First stop was the zoo with Liz, Joey, Brody, and Liz's parents.  Tatum wasn't happy when it was time to leave.

After the zoo we went straight to the park to meet up with some more friends.  I started "The Game On Diet" with some girlfriends so we are meeting up once a week to check in with each other and make sure we are hanging in there.  We got to chit chat and exchange tips and recipes...which is nice because sometimes I run out of ideas!

And the best part about the day was that is was 70 degrees!!!

Happy Birthday Dylan!

Happy Birthday Dyl!

Love you,
Mommy, Tatum, and Druz
(Your biggest fans!)

We celebrated and went to dinner and a movie on Monday night while Mom watched the kiddos.  We hadn't seen a movie in AGES and it was so nice to just go out by ourselves.  Usually when we have a sitter, we have something else to do with others.  It's rare to go out just the two of us.  We need to make more of an effort to do it more often because it was GREAT!

8 Months

Druz is 8 months old!

He has accomplished so much in the last month.

He started army crawling...EVERYWHERE.  It only took him about two weeks to figure out how to crawl on all fours and he is now EVERYWHERE and then some!

He has four teeth now.  The last one has been pretty hard on the little guy but he toughed it out and it finally cut a few days ago.

He LOVES standing up, with or without your help.  He is pulling up and can stand up while holding something with only one hand.  He can stand on his own and is starting to test the waters by letting go sometimes but it only last for a split second and he will either grab something for support or fall back on his bottom.  This is SO much better than Tatum.  She never used her hands and would just fall flat on her face every time.  Druz knows how to catch himself when he falls and is pretty tough if he does fall harder than he would like.

My guess is he will be walking before he is a year but you never know.

He is still smitten with Tatum.

He LOVES balls.

He just stares at Dylan when he is in the room...already admiring his Daddy.

He says "whoooooo whooooo", "mama", "dada", "baba"...none of which he knows what he is saying but he is starting to make the sounds so thats a step in the right direction.

He is sleeping about 11 hours at night and taking 2 good naps during the day.  He is on a good schedule with eating and bottles.  Still a picky eater...not into veggies.  Sometimes he isn't all that interested in eating at all, which you would not know that by his size.  The ladies at school weighed him and he was 22 pounds last week. He gained 3 pounds in 2 months.  Not sure if that's a lot but it sounds like it to me.

The kids LOVE bathing together and Tatum is so sweet with him.

She has started to take things from him from time to time but he doesn't get upset...yet!

I just adore his little smile.  I could look at it all day everyday.  He is still my happy little guy.  I love noticing the differences between the two of them.

They both amaze me daily.

MLK Day

The kids and I met Alison and Aslynn at the museum today.

Sometimes I wish I thought about things a little more.

The rodeo is here right now which means the museum/stock yards are CRAZY!  The museum is literally .5 miles from my house (so says my GPS watch when I run there), I guess this is what I get for not walking.  I load up the kids and drive over, the parking is usually $5, but if you are a Museum Member you can get a $2 discount if you are there for less than 90 minutes, which I figured we would be.  Well, when the stock show and rodeo are here the parking is $8 and there is no discount.  They also only take cash.  On a normal day, they will take credit cards.  Guess who waited 20 minutes just to get  into the parking lot with no cash and lives less than a half mile away?  That's right...ME!

At this point I'm beyond annoyed that I didn't walk but Alison was already there so I ran to the bank real quick and got out some cash then went back to a different parking lot with a shorter line so we could just get into the museum before the day ended.

In addition to the parking fiasco, they have the whole entire grounds roped off, usually you just walk into the museum and then show your pass, now you have to show your pass before you even get on the grounds.  During the stock show and rodeo a grounds pass is $10 because there is a midway (carnival rides), petting zoo, and building after building of vendor shopping.  If you are a member you get in free.  At first, I thought this was a great benefit of being a member. Then I realized why they offer this...because it would PISS off all members if they have to pay more money to park and then have to pay another $10 just to get through the doors of the museum.

On top of it all it is MLK Day so the kids are out of school and everyone and there Grandma cane out to see the horses, cows, and pigs.

BUT, once we finally made it inside, we had a blast!  We really LOVE living so close to all this entertainment...I'll be sad when we move.  ;o(

She played with water guns outside

She spun around like a ballerina

She pet a rabbit and snake

She discovered things through a magnifying glass

And so much more...

All-American Girl

Tatum sings the Star-Spangled Banner.  She makes you put your hand on your heart if you are listening to her.  She sometimes makes gestures with her hands and faces like Jessica Simpson when she sings.

How does she know the Star-Spangled Banner, you ask?  Her mom didn't know many nursery rhymes or lullabies so she got the Star-Spangled Banner at night.

I'm learning.

10k BABY!

Not to toot my own horn...but Toot Toot!

I ran my first 10k today.  It's the longest distance to date.  I ran with 3 girlfriends so that always makes it more fun and Dylan came to cheer me on so that makes it even better.

I'm a little annoyed with my time. I had my watch set to average each individual mile for my pace, which I didn't know.  I wanted to finish in under 10 min/mile and at the end I was just over 10 so I picked it up a little and thought I finished with 9:50/mile. Ummm, no, a 10k is 6.21 miles and my watched "lapped" after each mile so what I thought was my average pace for the whole race was just my average pace for the last .21 miles...so annoying!!!  The offiical time says 10:25/mile but my watch shows 10:04/mile.  My girlfriends was off 20 seconds from her watch and the official time so I'm going to go with my watch time for the simple fact that I like it better.

I fixed my watch for the next race.

This was a 2011 goal, but 14 days late is good enough for me!

I'm pretty bummed that we didn't think about getting a group picture!  But here are the only pictures that were taken.  Probably the worst pictures ever, but what can you do?

Maybe there will be better pictures when the race photos are up, lets hope.

Coming to the finish

Last potty break before the race...Gross, yes.  Dylan thought he was funny.taking a picture of me coming out. Cute, huh?

On to the next (as my friend Jay-Z would say)...15k next month!

Bath Time FUN

Taking a bath at Grandma's last night...they can't get enough of each other.  I know this will all change very soon but I will cherish the moments for now!

Picnic Time!

We have been lucky enough to have some great weather this week.  Nice enough to have a little picnic on our new picnic table Grandma gave Tatum for Christmas.

It was a little distracting to eat outside but she had fun and that's what matters!

We have had a very mild winter...hopefully I haven't jinxed it.  This weather makes me get excited about SPRING!

Gam-E and G-Pop!

Our house is like a revolving door around the holidays and we love it.

Dad and Barbara left around noon on Friday and Ron and Liza flew in later that night.

Liza booked a flight to come visit for Christmas since she was unaware of her birthday surprise visit.  Ron said he was all out of lies so he just let her book it.

We always love their visits.  Tatum gets all giddy just knowing they are coming to visit.

Her first jewlery box.  She loved it and all the goodies inside.  She got her first pair of earrings...stickers you put on your ears.  I LOVED those! As well as some necklaces and bracelets.  She would keep winding up the box so the ballerina would twirl around and she could hear the music.

We took a trip to the zoo.
Side story: Dylan went paint-balling with Tyler and Vitross and a few of Tyler's friends on Friday so I was left with the kiddos.  Dyl said Saturday could be my day (convenient since his parents were here) so I decided to go run with a friend and get some errands done...returns, etc.  Then I realized I would MUCH rather be at the zoo with my little family.  Dylan said he was glad I showed up because he felt like the single Dad who had his kids for the weekend.  I was just glad we live two minutes from the zoo so I was able to get there quick!

Ron was Super G-Pop...Dylan and I always avoid going to the bird enclosure, for the obvious reasons.  G-Pop took her in with no issue.  She LOVED feeding the birds.  Too bad that will be the only time she gets to do it.  ;o)  Unless G-Pop comes back for a visit, of course.

Dylan felt guilty so he ended up going in.

We played dress up with Tatums new princess dress and heels from Barbara

G-Pop and Tatum made breakfast

Best. Picture. EVER.

Dylan and Liza...showing off his new robe

Bears making out at the zoo...Not kidding.

New Year's Eve

Liz was generous enough to have us all over for New Year's Eve.  It was a great night hanging out with friends and catching up on life.

Once midnight hit, we were headed home.  Partly to beat the crazy drivers and partly because we were TIRED!  Staying up after 9 is a WILD night for us.  Staying up until midnight?!?!?!  We didn't know what to do with ourselves.

Thanks to Ron and Liza for watching the kiddos!
